TL;DR:
- For us, 3 bedrooms in normal condition take about 40 to 60 minutes. With a living room added, allow about an hour.
- Pet urine, heavy traffic marks, lots of stains and furniture left in place are what make a job run long.
- The visit and the drying are separate numbers. Steam-cleaned carpet dries in 4 to 6 hours, dry-cleaned carpet in 1 to 2 hours.
- A very fast whole-house clean usually means the vacuum or the pre-spray step was cut short.
How long does carpet cleaning take? For a typical 3 bedroom home with a living room, allow about an hour for the visit itself. Then allow the carpet a few more hours to dry before you walk on it normally.
Those are two different numbers, and mixing them up causes most of the confusion. "It only takes an hour" sounds rushed. "It takes 4 to 6 hours" sounds like a cleaner in your house all afternoon. Neither is right.
Here is where the hour goes, what stretches it, and how to plan the day.
How long does carpet cleaning take for a typical home?
For our jobs, 3 bedrooms in normal condition take about 40 to 60 minutes, and a 3 bedroom home with a living room takes about an hour. These are our own job times, not an industry average.
| Job | Usual time on site |
|---|---|
| 3 rooms, normal condition | About 40 minutes |
| 3 bedrooms | About 40 to 60 minutes |
| 3 bedrooms plus a living room | About 1 hour |
| 3 bedrooms, a lounge and a staircase | About 1 to 1.5 hours |
CHOICE, the Australian consumer group, suggests you allow three hours or more, depending on home size, method and how much furniture needs moving. That figure is higher than ours, and the reason is worth knowing. Their estimate includes moving furniture. We do not move furniture, so you move anything you want cleaned under before we arrive, and we clean around the rest. That keeps the visit short.
What happens during the visit?
Most of the hour goes into 5 steps, and only one of them is the part people picture.
- Inspection: we walk the rooms with you, check the carpet type and point out marks that may not fully come out.
- Pre-vacuum: dry soil comes out first. The Carpet Institute of Australia says vacuuming removes 70 to 80% of dry soil, so skipping it means you are washing grit into the pile.
- Pre-spray and agitation: traffic lanes and stains get a cleaning solution that is worked into the fibres.
- Dwell time: the solution needs a few minutes to loosen the soil. One system in the Carpet and Rug Institute's approval scheme specifies a 10 minute dwell before extraction, and equipment maker Powr-Flite recommends 5 to 10 minutes of dwell time.
- Cleaning and grooming: hot-water extraction or dry carpet cleaning, depending on the carpet, then a final groom and a realistic drying time for your rooms.
IICRC S100, a widely used industry cleaning standard, starts from evaluating carpet types and their condition before choosing a procedure. We look first for a plainer reason: the carpet decides the method, and the method decides the time.
What makes carpet cleaning take longer?
Condition, not floor area, is usually what makes carpet cleaning take longer than the table above.
The common causes:
- Pet urine: finding it and treating it is its own step, and it is priced separately from the clean. More on that on our pet treatment page.
- Heavy traffic lanes and lots of stains: each one gets pre-treated and worked, and old marks take more passes.
- Furniture still in the room: cleaning around a lot of items is slower, and many items left for us to shift can add a small charge.
- Embedded pet or human hair: it has to come out before the carpet can be cleaned properly.
- Delicate fibres: wool and some fluffy carpets may need a different method, which changes the timing.
- Access: parking far from the door, a second storey, or power and water that are off at the property all slow things down.
One job shows how much condition matters. A homeowner had cleaned their living room with a hire machine, used too much water and left the machine's vacuum off. The backing and the timber subfloor underneath were soaked and had started to smell sour. Pulling the water back out and treating it took about 1.5 hours, for one room.
How long do couches, mattresses and rugs take?
Couches, mattresses and rugs each take around 40 minutes to an hour on their own, and they add to the carpet time when booked together.
| Item | Usual time on site |
|---|---|
| Three-seat sofa | About 40 minutes |
| Six dining chairs | About 40 minutes |
| One armchair | About 30 to 40 minutes |
| Queen mattress, one side | About 40 to 60 minutes |
| Two rugs | About 40 to 60 minutes |
| Carpet plus tiled floors, single-storey home | About 2 to 3 hours |
Fabric work starts with a test. The Australian fabric supplier Warwick Fabrics tells owners to test hidden areas first and warns that heavy rinsing can soak what sits underneath. That test takes a minute or two and it is not optional. There is more on what a sofa job involves on our couch cleaning page.
Drying is different here too. Sofas, other upholstery and mattresses dry within a few hours, and we will give you a realistic time on the day. Rug drying depends on thickness, but it is usually within a day.
A very fast clean is not always a good sign
Speed on its own tells you very little. A couple of small, lightly used rooms really can be done in 20 minutes.
What worries me is a whole house done that fast. The steps that get cut when someone is rushing are the vacuum and the dwell time, because they look like nothing is happening. One customer called me after moving into a home another company had already cleaned, and the carpet still had crumbs, stains and gum in it. The fix was nothing clever. A proper vacuum, enough time for the pre-treatment to work, and the right product for the gum.
So the useful question is not "how fast are you?" It is "what do you do before the machine goes on?"
How long until you can use the room again?
It depends on the method. Carpet cleaned by hot-water extraction (steam cleaning) normally dries in 4 to 6 hours. Dry carpet cleaning normally dries in 1 to 2 hours.
Airflow does most of the work. Open windows if the weather allows, and keep the heating or air conditioning running. CHOICE notes that if extraction-cleaned carpet takes longer than 24 hours to dry, too much water was left behind. The US EPA's advice on damp homes is to dry wet areas within 24 to 48 hours to stop mould getting a start, which is the other reason good extraction matters.

Planning a clean around a move-out inspection
For rental handovers, the timing to watch is whether the carpet is dry before the inspection.
Book the clean for after the last of your furniture has gone, and early enough in the day that it can dry. An empty property is also quicker to clean, because nothing is in the way. Tenants Victoria points out that the landlord fills in a condition report at the final inspection, and you are allowed to be there for it. Dry carpet reads better on that report than damp carpet.
Reliability matters as much as speed here. I once took a move-out job at short notice because the renter's first cleaner had cancelled right before their final inspection. They passed, and the agency raised no carpet complaint. A good time estimate is only useful if the cleaner turns up for it.
Consumer Affairs Victoria tells tradespeople to give a careful time estimate with the quote, so ask for one. For the rest of the move-out steps, see our end of lease guide.
Frequently asked questions
How long does carpet cleaning take for a 3 bedroom house?
For us, 3 bedrooms in normal condition take about 40 to 60 minutes. Add a living room and it is about an hour. Add a lounge and a staircase and it is about 1 to 1.5 hours. Heavy stains, pet urine and furniture in the way all add time.
Do I need to be home while the carpets are cleaned?
It helps if someone is there at the start to let us in and go through the rooms, and payment is made after the job. If that is hard, sort out access and the room list with us before the day.
Can I stay in the house while the carpet is being cleaned?
Yes, you can carry on in another room. Keep kids and pets out of the room being worked on, and off the cleaned carpet until it is dry.
How long after carpet cleaning can I walk on it?
That is drying time, not cleaning time. Carpet cleaned by hot-water extraction (steam cleaning) normally dries in 4 to 6 hours. Dry carpet cleaning normally dries in 1 to 2 hours. Airflow, weather and carpet thickness move both numbers.
Why did my last carpet clean only take 20 minutes?
A quick job is not always a bad one, since a couple of small rooms in good condition do not take long. But if a whole house took 20 minutes, the cleaner probably skipped the pre-vacuum or did not give the pre-spray time to work. Both steps take minutes, and skipping them shows up as stains and dirt that come back.
