TL;DR:
- Work out what the smell is before you treat it. Sour milk, damp, pet urine and stale smoke each need a different fix.
- Baking soda helps with sour, acidic food smells near the surface. It needs a thin, even layer and a long wait.
- Moisture is behind most bad carpet smells. Dry any wet patch within a day or two.
- Sprays and scented powders only cover a smell, and powder residue can attract new dirt.
- Set-in pet urine and long-term smoke can go below the carpet. That is where home methods stop working.
Most people try to get a smell out of carpet the same way: a sprinkle of something scented, a spray, maybe an open window. Sometimes that works for a day. Then the room warms up and the smell is back.
The reason is simple. A carpet smell is almost always coming from something in the carpet (a spill, moisture, urine, smoke residue), and fragrance does nothing to that something. Here is how to work out which one you have and what actually shifts each of them.
Start by naming the smell
The kind of smell tells you where it is coming from, and that decides the fix. Get down close to the carpet, find the strongest spot, and press the pile with your hand. A spot that feels damp or smells stronger when pressed is your source.
| What it smells like | Likely source | First move |
|---|---|---|
| Sour, cheesy or rancid | Milk, vomit or food spill | Rinse and dry the spot, then baking soda |
| Musty, earthy, like a wet towel | Moisture in the backing or underlay | Find the water and dry it |
| Sharp, ammonia-like, worse on humid days | Pet urine | Enzyme treatment on the source |
| Stale ashtray | Tobacco smoke residue | Clean, ventilate, keep expectations honest |
| Dusty and flat over the whole room | General soil and old residue | Thorough vacuum, then a proper clean |
If the whole room smells but no spot stands out, it is usually built-up soil, or the smell is coming from something else in the room (curtains, a couch, a vent).
Does baking soda get smells out of carpet?
Yes, for some smells. Baking soda is a base, and it neutralises the acidic compounds behind sour, rancid smells like old milk.
McGill University's Office for Science and Society explains that it reacts with butyric acid, the compound behind that rancid-butter smell, and turns it into a salt that does not evaporate. The same piece notes it only works with plenty of surface contact, so a little shake from the box achieves very little.
To use it properly:
- Make sure the carpet is completely dry first.
- Spread a thin, even layer over the whole area, not a pile on one spot.
- Leave it overnight, longer if you can keep people and pets off it.
- Vacuum slowly, in two directions, until no white is left.
What baking soda cannot do is reach a smell sitting in the underlay. And I would not leave powder in the pile long term. Scented deodorising powders in particular settle deep, and what is left behind just holds on to new dirt.
How do you get sour milk or vomit smell out of carpet?
Remove everything you can, wash the spot with a mild detergent and warm water, rinse, then dry it fast. The smell comes from what is left in the fibres, so the cleaning matters more than the deodorising.
The Carpet and Rug Institute's spot advice for milk says to act quickly: blot liquids with a white cloth, scrape up semi-solids with a spoon, and work from the edges in so the spill does not spread. Do not rub. Rubbing pushes it deeper and frays the pile.
For vomit, wear gloves and lift as much as you can with paper towel first. NSW Health's gastro guidance says surfaces should be cleaned with a neutral detergent and hot water, and that bleach is for hard, non-porous surfaces only. On carpet, bleach will strip the colour long before it fixes the smell.
Once the spot is rinsed and dry, a layer of baking soda overnight deals with the sour edge that is left.
Why does carpet smell worse after it gets wet?
Because water carries the smell-causing material deep into the backing and underlay, and anything that stays damp there starts to turn. A carpet that smelled fine can smell sour within days of getting soaked.
The US Environmental Protection Agency says that if wet materials are dried within 24-48 hours of a leak or spill, mould will not grow in most cases. Victoria's Better Health Channel lists carpet among the furnishings where mould grows best when it is damp and poorly ventilated.
One job that comes to mind: a homeowner had washed their living room with a hire machine, put down too much water and accidentally left its vacuum off. The backing and the timber subfloor underneath were soaked, and the room had a sour smell. Extracting the trapped water and treating the area took about 1.5 hours, and the smell went once the carpet dried properly.
If a patch smells musty and feels cool or damp underneath, look for the water first. Our guide to damp carpet smell covers leaks, humidity and airflow in more detail.
How do you get pet urine smell out of carpet?
Treat the source with an enzyme-based product and avoid anything containing ammonia. Urine is the one smell that cleaning the surface almost never fixes on its own.
RSPCA Australia advises cleaning accidents with a non-ammonia-based product, partly because ammonia smells like urine to a dog and invites a repeat. RSPCA Pet Insurance's training guide recommends an enzyme-based cleaner to break down the odour.
The hard part is finding all of it. Old urine is often invisible in daylight, so I use a blue light to show where it is and check the spots with the customer before treating. A homeowner once called me after another company had already cleaned the carpet and the urine smell was still there. The fix was not more cleaning. It was finding every spot and treating each one with an enzyme product, and after that the customer confirmed the smell was gone.
Our urine smell guide goes through the first ten minutes, home remedies and why the smell returns on humid days.
Can you get cigarette smoke smell out of carpet?
Partly. Cleaning and airing a room reduce a smoke smell, but in a home where people smoked for years, some of the residue usually stays in the carpet and underlay.
Tobacco in Australia, the Cancer Council Victoria reference work, says smoke residue can persist for months and years after smoking stops. The Thirdhand Smoke Resource Center goes further and says even professional deep cleaning often fails once residue has soaked into upholstery or carpet padding.
So be realistic. A thorough clean of the carpet, plus washing curtains and wiping walls, usually makes a big difference after light or occasional smoking. After heavy, long-term smoking, the carpet and underlay may need replacing, and I would rather tell you that up front than sell you a clean that cannot deliver.
Do carpet deodoriser sprays fix the smell?
No. They cover it for a while, then the smell comes back because its source is still there.
They can also bother the people living with them. A University of Melbourne study found one in three Australians report health problems such as headaches or breathing trouble when exposed to fragranced products, air fresheners included.
The same goes for heavily scented powders. They settle into the pile, and the residue holds dirt, so the carpet looks dull sooner and the smell under the perfume is still waiting.
What a professional clean can and cannot do
A proper carpet clean rinses out the soil, body oils and old residue that cause a flat, stale smell across a room. General sanitising and deodorising come with a standard clean at no extra cost, and coffee, wine and food spills are treated as part of it.
Set-in pet urine is different. It needs pet odour treatment, which is priced separately per affected room because it takes extra product and time. That treatment covers the carpet fibres. We do not treat the underlay or subfloor, and if urine has gone that deep, I will say so before starting.
Pricing works per room with a minimum per visit, and the scope is confirmed on the day before we begin. If anything about the result is not right, the 7-day satisfaction guarantee means a free re-clean within 7 days.
Frequently asked questions
What is the fastest way to get a smell out of carpet?
Find the spot and remove what is causing it, then dry the area quickly. Blot up any liquid, rinse lightly, press it dry with a weighted towel and open a window or run a fan. For a general stale smell, a thin layer of baking soda left overnight and vacuumed up well is a quick first step.
How long should baking soda sit on carpet?
Overnight is a sensible minimum on dry carpet. Spread it thinly over the whole area, then vacuum slowly in two directions. Leftover powder deep in the pile can hold dirt, so do not leave it there for weeks.
Why does my carpet smell after it has been cleaned?
Usually it stayed wet too long. Too much water or a weak vacuum leaves moisture in the backing, and a sour or musty smell follows. Good airflow straight after cleaning helps, and a smell that lasts past a couple of days is worth having checked.
Can you permanently get a pet urine smell out of carpet?
Often, but not always. It depends on how much urine there was and how deep it went. Treating the source with an enzyme product works far better than fragrance. Urine that has soaked into the underlay or subfloor may need those layers dealt with, which is outside a carpet clean.
Does steam cleaning remove odours from carpet?
It helps with smells that come from soil, spills and residue in the fibres, because hot-water extraction rinses them out. It is not enough on its own for set-in pet urine, which needs a separate enzyme treatment, and it cannot reach smoke residue soaked into the underlay.
