Tile and grout cleaning cost is one of those questions where every answer online seems to be about a different job. One guide says $25 to $40 a square metre. Another says $100 to $400 for the whole thing. A third quotes by the hour. None of them are lying. They are just measuring different units.
This post sorts out what the numbers mean, what actually changes a quote, and how to get a price you will really pay.
What does tile and grout cleaning cost in Australia?
Most household jobs cost somewhere between $100 and $400 in total. Airtasker's cost guide, built from jobs posted on its marketplace, puts the national range at $100 to $400 with a median of $260.
By area, the same guide lists a bathroom's tiles and grout at around $100 to $200, a kitchen at $80 to $200 or more, and the floor tiles of a whole house at $200 to $400 or more. Balconies are the cheap end at $50 to $80.

Why do tile and grout cleaning cost guides disagree?
Because they price in three different units, and the unit changes the headline more than the work does.
hipages quotes $25 to $40 per square metre and works an example of 10 square metres at $250 to $400. ServiceTasker quotes tile and grout work at $25 to $50 an hour. Airtasker quotes whole jobs. Some cleaners, us included, charge a flat rate per square metre well under the hipages band and then apply a minimum.
So a per square metre figure on its own tells you very little. A small ensuite priced at a low rate hits the minimum. A big open-plan floor priced at a high rate becomes an expensive quote very quickly. Measure the tiled floor you actually want cleaned, then compare the totals.
What is a minimum visit charge on a tile job?
It is the floor price for turning up with the gear, and almost every tile cleaner has one. The drive, the setup, the water, the power and the pack-down cost the same whether the floor is 6 square metres or 60.
Ours is higher for tile than for carpet. That is why a single bathroom floor on its own rarely comes in cheap, and why it usually makes sense to do the laundry, kitchen and hallway on the same visit if they need it.
Doing tiles alongside carpet is common for the same reason. A normal single-storey home with three carpeted bedrooms and the main areas tiled takes about 2 to 3 hours when both are done together. Double-storey homes take longer because the equipment has to move between levels.
What pushes a tile and grout cleaning quote up?
The things that genuinely move a quote are about the surface underneath the dirt, not the dirt itself.
- Old wax or failed sealer. If a previous coating has trapped dark soil underneath, it has to be stripped before the grout can be cleaned properly. That is extra work at a different rate, and it should be quoted as such.
- Natural stone. Marble, limestone and travertine react with acid. The Natural Stone Institute warns that lemon, vinegar and other acids can dull or etch these stones, so the product and method have to suit the material. Some stone is not suitable for our process at all, and we will tell you that up front.
- Shower walls and splashbacks. Wall tiles are a separate job from floor tiles almost everywhere, and hipages notes that floors generally get dirtier and cost more than walls. With us, shower tile walls are an add-on you ask for, not something assumed.
- Access. Stairs, a double-storey layout or no parking all add time.
What should not move the price is ordinary built-up grime. Grey grout in a kitchen or hallway is exactly what the service is for.
Is grout sealing part of the price?
Usually not, and you should check before comparing two quotes. Sealing is a separate step with its own product and curing time, and hipages lists cleaning plus sealing as its own line at $25 to $35 per square metre.
The Tile Council of North America explains that cement grout is porous and absorbs stains, which is why some owners choose to seal. Grout manufacturer LATICRETE adds that no cement grout is truly stain-resistant and that routine care is what keeps it looking right.
We do not recommend sealing and we do not include it. It is quoted separately on request. One thing worth knowing: a cheap quote with sealing included may be using a topical coating, and the Tile Council notes those coatings wear off under foot traffic.
Why is professional grout cleaning worth paying for?
Because mopping moves dirty water around, and the grout soaks it up. That is the most common misunderstanding I hear. LATICRETE notes that damp mopping deposits dirt residue in the grout joint over time, which is why a well-mopped floor can still have dark lines.
The fix is lifting the dirty water back out before it dries in the joint. The Tile Council describes the best way to clean grout as applying a cleaner and then vacuuming up the dirty water, then rinsing and extracting again. It also explains that cement is dissolved by acids, which is why an alkaline cleaner works better on grout than vinegar and a scrubbing brush.
That is broadly what a proper job looks like: solution on, agitation where the grime is heavy, spinner or hot-water extraction to pull the soil out, then a final mop. For the full DIY comparison, we covered that in our grout cleaner guide.
What cleaning can and cannot fix
Built-up grime usually lifts and the original grout colour often comes back, but cleaning cannot repair grout. One home I did before it went on the market had carpets and tiled living areas done on the same day, and the dark grime came out of the grout lines and the floor looked far fresher. A customer put it more simply in a review: "Cleaned the grout better than I expected. Tiles look fresh again."
What cleaning cannot do is replace grout that is cracked or missing, undo bleach or acid damage, or change a colour that is not dirt. Black spotting in a shower is often mould rather than grime, and grout mould needs the moisture problem dealt with or it comes back.

How to get an accurate price the first time
Give the cleaner these things and the number you get back should be the one you pay:
- The floor area in square metres, or the rooms and a rough size of each.
- Whether any of it is natural stone, and if you are not sure, a photo.
- Whether the floor has ever been sealed, waxed or coated.
- Whether you also want shower walls or other wall tiles done.
- Stairs or a second level, and where we can park.
Then ask for a single total in writing. Australian law requires a single total price that includes GST and every unavoidable charge. Consumer Affairs Victoria tells tradespeople to be clear and specific about what a quote covers, and once you accept a quote, business.gov.au notes it becomes binding. A quote can still change if the floor turns out different from what was described, such as more area or a coating that needs stripping.
